BEING DEPRESSED SUCKS!! YOU KNOW THAT. BUT, HOW DO YOU COPE WITH IT?

CAN TRAINING JIU JITSU HELP LIFT DEPRESSION??

I was severely depressed when I came home from college in 2004. EVERYDAY, I contemplated even getting out of bed. I hated my job, I hated my relationship, I hated myself

After a few months of banging around at bars and getting into trouble and fights, I was directed to a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gym. I didn't want to go but, I did. Immediately, I started to think less about how badly my life sucked and more about what I was going to do in the next class. I just kept going. With each class I got better, healthier and, a little more self confident. A weight was lifted off of my shoulders.

Not only did I excel at the art & sport, winning contests and championships, I also made friends that had goals that mirrored mine. Having a constant, positive, support system was KEY to my mental health.  I still have many of these friends today.

Eleven years later, I still train to combat the cloud that wants to hang over my head. EVERYDAY I succeed. Everyday I say NO to what is and YES to what can be and look for constant positive progress.

JIU JITSU SAVED MY LIFE!

GOOD NEWS!!

Just by getting to the gym 3 times a week, you are elevating your mental state with aLL KINDS OF GOOD hormones!

Here are a few tips to help you along the way!

  • SET A SMALL EXERCISE GOAL!

For some people with depression, the first step is joining a class or exercise group. Whatever exercise you do, the important thing is that you do it every day and stick with it.

  • GO FOR EXERCISES THAT OFFER SOCIAL SUPPORT

There are ALWAYS people in Jiu Jitsu class and they ALL  have a similar goal of being a better version of themselves that they were the day, week, month or, year before. A lot of folks won’t exercise on their own. Having a partner that you can rely on can be a great  source of much needed motivation when you think you're done.

  •  FIND AN EXERCISE OR WORKOUT THAT YOU ENJOY

If you don’t like a type of exercise, chances are you’re not going to do it, whether or not you’re depressed. But if you enjoy what you’re doing, whether it’s Jiu Jitsu or walking; you’ll be more likely to stick with it over time.

Many studies have shown the benefits of physical activity for people of all ages who have depression. And some studies show that exercising is just as effective in treating depression as taking medications.
